Hi everyone, today I want to share my recent hiking experience at Nottawasaga Bluffs and Caves, part of the Nottawasaga Lookout Provincial Nature Reserve, located about 2.5 hours from Brampton in the heart of Ontario’s Niagara Escarpment.
We started our hike on the white-marked Bruce Trail, which is one of the oldest and longest trails in Canada, stretching over 890 km. This section of the trail takes you through beautiful forests, offering a serene escape into nature. After a short distance, we veered off onto the blue-marked side trails, which lead to some of the area’s highlights.
One of the first places we explored was the Key Hole, a narrow passage formed by large limestone rock formations typical of the Niagara Escarpment. The Key Hole is a tight squeeze but offers a unique challenge and some great photo opportunities. These formations date back over 450 million years, shaped by glaciers and the movement of the earth’s crust, giving you a sense of the ancient geology of the area.
We then followed the blue trail further to reach the Bluffs Lookout. The panoramic view from here is stunning—you can see miles of rolling hills, farmland, and thick forests. This spot really captures the rugged beauty of the escarpment and gives you a sense of why this area is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
The Nottawasaga Bluffs also feature several caves along the trails. These caves, formed over millions of years, are cool to explore and offer a glimpse into the natural history of the region. Some of them were used by Indigenous peoples and early settlers for shelter, and today they add an extra layer of adventure to the hike.
If you’re looking for a combination of rich history, geology, and scenic beauty, this hike is a must-visit. It’s not just a walk through the woods—it’s a journey through time!”
